Kelly Mahood
Kelly joined Linklaters from New Zealand in September 2005.
He’s a Managing Associate and is truly enjoying the global nature
of our work.
Getting to know clients better.
The increased focus on business and client development that
comes with being a managing associate is, for me, the most
enjoyable aspect of my role. As a trainee, you work closely with a
client on a transaction and then move on once the transaction is
completed, which in terms of exposure is certainly no bad thing.
However, as a managing associate, you have the opportunity to build
relationships with clients, even outside of a particular deal.
This approach allows me to understand my client’s business from
a commercial perspective as well as a legal one. It allows me to
appreciate the challenges and developments they face, and that
means, as a firm, we’re better placed to provide them with quick,
relevant advice when they need it most.
Building deep relationships.
Client development can range from catching up with contacts for
coffee or lunch, or client entertainment, which could involve
anything from attending a sports event to dinner. We also hold a
lot of internal meetings to ensure wherever we are in the world as
a firm, we’re co-ordinated in our dealings with any particular
client. Client development at Linklaters is seen as an extremely
important skill. I’ve received extensive training on subjects
varying from pitches to relationship building. I’ve also benefited
from the support of partners and my wider team, who are always
there to offer advice and assistance.
Finding the Big Apple satisfying.
Adding value to the legal services we provide through my
understanding of a client’s business is incredibly satisfying. Even
more so when, in my case, you get the opportunity to travel to New
York to solidify relationships with clients who, ordinarily, I’d
only ever get to speak to on the phone. But life here isn’t all
work and no play. My team regularly take ski trips to France and,
since arriving I’ve not missed one – even if every year I am the
only snowboarder.
