Q&A
Can I start my training contract earlier than the advertised
intake?
We do receive some applications from candidates who have already
finished law school. However, as is general practice across most
law firms, we recruit our trainees two years in advance of the
intake date, and cannot guarantee you a position earlier than that
advertised.
Do you accept applications from candidates who need a work
permit?
Yes we do. If you are successful in securing a training contract
we will arrange your work permit. Our offer will be dependent upon
us successfully obtaining a work permit for you, and you will have
responsibility for providing all of the information and
documentation required (e.g. proof of academic and professional
qualifications, current CV and valid passport).
Can I train to be an English solicitor with a law degree from
overseas?
You will be required to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law
(GDL) and then the Legal Practice Course (LPC) before you are able
to start your training contract. The requirements are different if
your undergraduate law degree was obtained from a common law
jurisdiction (e.g. Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South
Africa). Please check these requirements with the law society.
Do you hold any open days?
We provide several opportunities to meet us - including law
fairs, presentations at several universities across the UK, and
other on-campus activities. In addition you may be able to visit
our offices for an open day arranged through your university. It's
a good idea to keep an eye on our events
calendar to see what's happening.
For postgraduate students, we hold an open day in December.
Do you offer internships outside London?
We offer internships at a number of our offices around the
world. These are recruited directly by the individual offices. For
more information, please visit the careers site of the country to
which you would like to apply. Click here
to be re-directed to our global careers site.
How can I apply?
To apply for a training contract or vacation scheme in
London, please complete our online application form which you will
find in the Apply section of this
website. We do not accept CVs or covering letters as we find they
don't provide us with the detailed information we need to assess
all candidates fairly and objectively against our selection
criteria.
Do you offer work experience?
We run two four-week Summer vacation schemes for
penultimate year undergraduate law students who are studying at UK
universities. We also offer a Christmas
vacation scheme solely for final year non-law students who are
studying at UK universities. For penultimate year law students
studying in Australia we run an Australian
clerkship at our London office, which runs for four weeks in
November/December. Furthermore, we run an Indian internship in June at our London office
for penultimate year law students studying in India. Unfortunately,
we are unable to offer any form of work experience outside these
schemes. For more information on all of our vacation schemes,
including when and how to apply, please see the Vacation Schemes section of the website.
